Kerri Glasscock - Festival Director/CEO Sydney Fringe Festival
“We are thrilled to have been able to shape and drive the conception and initial stages of the OFF BROADWAY PRECINCT. The Sydney Fringe Festival is the largest Independent arts festival in NSW. Each September we represent and work with over 2000 Independent artists and companies of whom more than 90% live and work in Sydney. In partnership with our sector, local Government and key stakeholders we have been working to solve a number of key issues that are currently facing local artists. The lack of affordable, appropriate space is the most pressing problem for artists in our City.
Our Independent artists should be the most treasured cultural asset of our City, for too long they have lived hand to mouth with no permanent home. For a vibrant cultural city we need a wide variety of cultural facilities, we need small intimate theatres, we need spaces where emerging artists can affordably explore ideas, we need spaces for curated work, and spaces artists can run themselves. We need to encourage artists to think outside the box, to redefine the traditional workspace and use available, affordable spaces. This doesn’t just make cultural sense it make economic sense.
The OFF BROADWAY PRECINCT will now provide a permanent home for the Independent artists of Sydney. Enabling artists to become self sufficient, to have secure spaces that they have ownership over, where they can turn cultural practice into sustainable businesses, and a new cultural precinct that provides the audiences and patrons of Sydney with a vibrant, unique and varied cultural offering.”
Holly Throsby- Musician/ Off Broadway Task Force Chair
In 2014 a joint task force between the then Marrickville and Leichhardt Councils was formed with key stakeholders of the local creative community to examine how to economically reactivate Parramatta Road and neighbouring business areas through cultural activity. The subsequent OFF BROADWAY PLAN was conceived and submitted, and unanimously endorsed by Council.
Holly was the Chair of the original task force. A multiple ARIA Award nominee Holly is one of Australia’s most successful and well love musicians. Releasing works that span from hauntingly beautiful sketches to vivid and lively children’s songs.
Richard Pearson/Administrator of the Inner West Council
Mr Richard Pearson is the Administrator of the Inner West Council. He has lived in Summer Hill for over 20 years, and has an affinity for the area and its communities.
With over 25 years’ experience in town planning, organisational change and reform and the administration of government agencies, Mr Pearson is honoured to be leading the new Inner West Council through an exciting period of change.
“The new Council is committed to realising the projects championed and created by the previous inner west councils,” said Mr Pearson. “The inner west is home to one of NSW’s largest populations of arts and cultural workers and the former Leichhardt Council fought hard to protect and rebuild Sydney’s live music and cultural scene.
“The new Inner West Council is committed to following through on this fight."
The Off Broadway Precinct is a ground breaking plan to revitalise Parramatta Road in Annandale and Leichhardt as a live music and performance precinct.
In doing so it will support and promote existing businesses and create new opportunities for start ups, which will benefit our entire community and the live music and performance industries.”
